PETALUMA, California—July 15, 2013—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently bestowed the award-winning Petaluma Health Center with its Energy Star qualification. The Energy Star certification is awarded to buildings that perform in the top 25 percent for energy efficiency compared to similar buildings. The community clinic went beyond the requirements, performing in the top 20 percent.

“We are honored to receive the EPA’s Energy Star award in recognition of our energy-saving efforts,” said Kathie Powell, Petaluma Health Center’s CEO. “We are committed to improving the health of our patients, our community and our planet, while also lowering our energy costs.”

DES provided full tenant-improvement design services to turn an office building into an empowering medical clinic. Cost-effective improvements were made to reduce energy usage by using energy more efficiently and conserving it. Software management programs for HVAC and lighting were implemented to manage energy usage and monitor efficiency of the systems. The result is a community clinic that using roughly 50 percent less energy than the typical health center.

The 52,000-sf facility has made a lasting impact in Sonoma County beyond energy efficiency. The state-of-the-art clinic was previously awarded the Top Medical Project of 2011 by the North Bay Business Journal. Today, the project is flourishing, with 25% more patients served, shorter wait times, and a modern upbeat feel that promotes health and healing.
