Sunnyvale Fire Station 5

Sunnyvale, California

Responding to its neighborhood context, the shared facility joins four major programs by intersecting  four rectilinear volumes: living quarters, drive-through apparatus bay, administrative/training space, and shooting range. The metal and glass front facade connects to the neighborhood’s modern office buildings with painted aluminum panels, steel sectional doors, and extensive glazing. The articulated front entrance welcomes visitors and the community with a visible entryway and lobby. The admin and training space is shared by Sunnyvale’s Department of Public Safety (DPS), which provides police, fire and emergency medical services under one model of service. Providing another new resource, an open 30,000-sf training area was programmed behind the station for training exercises and drills.
