DES was built on the concept of architecture and structural engineering coming together to create a better building - we continue to reinforce that approach and include Interiors, landscape architecture, civil engineering, green building consulting, and graphics. We are accustomed to having a lot of voices and opinions at the table. We like it that way.

Mixed-use projects are a reflection and response to an urban fabric. As designers introducing a new building, DES provides functionality, flexibility, and beauty to match local environments. Our design language reflects textures, materials, colors, scale, as well as overall character and style of a neighborhood.
The design of today’s workplace has become increasingly directed towards expressing company culture, facilitating teamwork, and creating a sense of place. DES designs workplaces that support employees to work creatively and productively – from large collaboration areas to quick touchdown spaces – balancing the needs of both employee and employer. DES uses innovative workplace strategies to determine priorities for each client, while leveraging real estate and operating costs.
As the epicenter of innovation, the San Francisco Bay Area’s science and technology industry demands environments flexible enough for people to effortlessly transition from workplace to research and back. DES understands that in order to keep pace with product and service advancements, science and technology work environments must support their ever-evolving needs. Our science and technology practice group has the insight and experience to create dynamic spaces to serve the industry’s top innovators.
Innovative educational design assists with the logical connection between the subjects students are studying and the world around them. DES understands learning spaces well. Since 1994, we have designed over 1,000 school and college projects, representing about 20% of our portfolio. This breadth of experience means that our educational projects benefit from our strong familiarity with the qualities inherent to great schools, ones that inspire students to discover, teachers to educate, and staff to lead.
Today’s healthcare approach embraces the idea of prevention – taking action of one self’s health now for a better future. Shifting from reactive to proactive. DES’ designs of health & wellness facilities reflect this transformation, focusing on quality of workplace for caregivers, creating comfortable experiences for patients, and integrating new technologies that enhance healthcare delivery. Since 1987, DES has completed over 300 healthcare projects – from community clinics and surgery centers to dental suites and labs.
